UH-72A Lakota |
|
|
The UH-72A Lakota is the new US Army's new light utility helicopter, named after a Native American tribe. It is in line with the US Army's tradition of giving its helicopters Indian names. The Lakota is a military version of the Eurocopter EC145. Helicopters are being manufactured by American Eurocopter. It will replace the older UH-1H Iroquois and OH-58C Kiowa helicopters. The Lakota helicopters will be used inside the USA only, supporting homeland security, disaster relief and law enforcement operations. The first UH-72 Lakota was delivered to the US Army in 2006. Deliveries of initial eight helicopters were completed in 2007. Later more helicopters were ordered and a full-rate production was authorized. The US Army's requirement is for a total of 345 helicopters. The Army National Guard will receive the majority of these helicopters. Five helicopters were ordered by the US Navy. The UH-72A Lakota helicopter is unarmed. It is used mainly for logistics and support missions in non-combat environments. It will also perform medical evacuations and personnel recovery. This helicopter has a payload capacity of 1 790 kg. It can also carry a maximum underslung load of 1 500 kg. The Lakota has a crew of two and can accommodate up to 8 troops. Alternatively it can carry two stretchers and medical attendants. Helicopter is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel 1E2 turboshaft engines. The UH-72A can fly in one-engine-inoperable mode. Other safety features include a crashworthy airframe and seats. An armed scout version of the UH-72 is proposed for the US Army, as a replacement to the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior.
