Marjata Intelligence collection ship |

The Marjata is a purpose-built electronic intelligence collection vessel. It is operated by the Norwegian Intelligence service and is considered to be one of the most advanced spy ships in the world. It's main role is surveillance of Russian submarine activity in the North. It is operating close to the Russian border. Officially it is referred as a scientific research ship. The Marjata was ordered in 1991. It was laid down in 1992 and commissioned in 1995. It is a ramform type ship with an unusual hull shape. It has a narrow front and wide beam, in order to provide a highly stable surveillance platform. The hull is extremely stable during rough weather. The Marjata also has large internal bay for computing and analyzing of reconnaissance data. Ramform type ships are often used for geological surveys of the seabed. The Marjata is well suited for operation in the Arctic for prolonged periods of time. Crew of this ship consists of 14 sailors and 31 intelligence technicians. Russian sources claim, that Marjata carries various detection equipment onboard. The Marjata is powered by two diesel engines and two gas turbines. This vessel has a helicopter platform.
