In 7 September 1965 Bell flew the prototype of the world's first dedicated attack helicopter. Based on the Model 204 utility helicopter, the Model 209 introduced a new slim fuselage with a fighter-type cockpit. The pilot sits high in the rear with a co-pilot/gunner lower in the front directing the fire of a wide range of weapons mounted on lateral stub wings or under the nose. The AH-1G HueyCobra went into production in 1966 and over 1 000 were delivered in the first four years. The AH-1G saw extensive service in Vietnam.

The AH-1J SeaCobra was the first twin-engine version, for the US Marine Corps, with a 1 800 hp T400 installation; in 1974-5 a batch of 202 with TOW missiles was supplied to Iran.

The AH-1Q was an interim US Army version with TOW missiles, produced by conversion from AH-1G airframes, while the AH-1S, fitted with the 1 800-shp T53-703 engine was a production HueyCobra with TOW capability and other improvements. A number of AH-1Q aircraft were also modified to -1S standards, while AH-1S model aircraft were themselves modified into a number of variants. In addition, the AH-1P was produced by conversion of AH-1S helicopters with flat-plate canopies and other revisions. This confusing situation was resolved in 1987, when all surviving US Army HueyCobras were updated to a common AH-1F standard.

Kamov Ka-52 Hokum-B

The Kamov Ka-52 Alligator (NATO Designation Hokum-B) is a two-seat version of the Ka-50. It is a multi-role all-weather attack helicopter, capable operating in daytime and at night. Development starter in 1994 and the type was first flown in 1997. The Ka-52 has been ordered for Russian service, and it's small-scale series production commenced in 2008. However it is unlikely that the Hokum-B will be fielded in large numbers due to budget restrictions. By 2012 only 30 helicopters will be delivered. This helicopter is also proposed for export customers.

The Ka-52 can be recognized from the Ka-50 by a wider nose and twin-seat cockpit. Seats are arranged side-by-side. This helicopter can be used as a trainer. Both pilots have full controls of the helicopter. Such arrangement also simplifies work during combat. The Ka-52 shares 85% of it's airframe, parts, components and systems with the Ka-50. Most of the changes were made to the cockpit.

The Kamov Ka-52 Alligator is fitted with uprated TV3-117VMA turboshaft engines. The Hokum-B has unique maneuverability, which was derived from it's two coaxial contra-rotating main rotors. It is among the most maneuverable helicopters in the world.

Armor of the Alligator withstands hits from 23-mm projectiles. Pilots are seated in ejection seats. It can also fly when one engine is disabled.

Kawasaki OH-1

From the mid-1980s the Japan Defence Agency (JDA), began to consider a successor to the OH-6D light helicopters currently in service with the Japanese Ground Self-Defence Force. It was decided to procure an indigenous type for the scout/reconnaissance roles. In 1992 Kawasaki was selected as prime contractor with 60 percent of the programme, the balance being allocated equally between Fuji and Mitsubishi. The three companies established the Observation Helicopter Engineering Team to develop the programme, on which detailed work began in 1992.

The resulting OH-1, nicknamed Ninja, is a conventional machine that is relatively small and of typical gunship helicopter configuration. Its structure comprises, by weight, 40 per cent carbonfibre-reinforced plastics, and it features a fenestron type tail rotor.

Each crew member has two LCD colour multi-function displays, and the gunner has a head-up display. The mission avionics include a trainable roof-mounted Kawasaki package (forward of the main rotor) with a Fujitsu thermal imager, NEC colour TV camera and NEC laser rangefinder. Protection is enhanced by the installation of an infra-red jammer on the helicopter's spine to rear of the main gearbox.

The first of six prototypes made its initial flight on 6 August 1996, and the first of a possible 150 to 200 OH-1s was deliver ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

USS Enterprise

The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft-carrier, the Enterprise was laid down in 1958 and commissioned in November 1961, as what was then the largest warship ever built. Since exceeded in size by the Nimitz class ships, the Enterprise was built to a modified Forrestal-class design, with its larger dimensions dictated by the powerplant of eight A2W pressurised water enricheduranium fuelled nuclear reactors. The high cost of its construction prevented fice other vessels in the naval building programme from being built.

From January 1979 to March 1982 Enterprise underwent an extensive refit which included the rebuilding of its island superstructure and the fitting of new radar systems and a mast to replace the characteristic ECM dome and billboard radar antenna that had been used since it was built. Enterprise is equipped with four steam catapults, four deck-edge aircraft elevators and carries 2 520 tons of aviation ordnance plus 10.3 million litres (2.72 million US gal) of aircraft fuel. Like that of other US carriers the Enterprise's ordnance has included 10-kT B61, 20-kT B57, 60-kT B43, 100-kT B61, 200-kT B43, 330-kT B61, 400-kT B43, 600-kT B43 and 900-kT B61 tactical nuclear gravity bombs, 100-kT Walleye air-to-surface missiles and 10-kT B57 depth bombs, while 1.4-MT ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

Type 90

First prototype of the Type 90 main battle tank was built in 1982. It was intended to replace the Type 61 medium tanks in service with Japanese Ground Self-Defense Forces. The Type 90 was developed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in cooperation with German Krauss-Maffei and MaK tank manufacturers. Consequently the Type 90 has a number of external similarities with German Leopard 2. This main battle tank was officially adopted by the JGSDF in 1989 and the initial deliveries commenced in 1990. A full-scale production began in 1992. The Type 90 is currently among the best MBTs in the world. Furthermore for a period of time it was the most expensive production MBT.

The Type 90 is protected by composite armor with superior resistance qualities. Half of the ammunition is stored in the turret bustle with blow-out panels.

Vehicle is armed with German Rheinmetall Rh-M-120 120-mm smoothbore gun, which was built in Japan under license. This gun is fitted with an autoloader and fires all standard NATO 120-mm projectiles. Autoloader holds 20 rounds, stored in the turret bustle, while the rest of ammunition is stored in front of the hull. It is worth mentioning that the gun has to be depressed to 0 degrees to be loaded after each shot.

Fire control system for the Type 90 was developed by Mitsubishi. It is one of the mos ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

Type 77

The Type 77 amphibious APC was manufactured by China North Industries, universally known as NORINCO. It originated as a copy of the Soviet BTR-50P APC but the Type 77 version displays numerous differences and is powered by a more powerful diesel engine which imparts a better all-round performance. Many of the Type 77's components are also used for the Type 63 light tank.

The layout of the Type 77 is simple and basic whit the crew compartment forward, the main troop-carrying compartment in the centre and the engine compartment in the rear. THe 16 troops carried enter and leave via roof hatches. Armament is limited to a single unprotected 12.7-mm MG located over the commander's roof hatch, but there are firing ports for some of the occupants along the hull sides.

The Type 77 is fully amphibious following minimal preparation, propulsion once in the water being provided by twin waterjets located at the rear.

As well as being configured as an APC, the empty Type 77 may be employed as a forward area load carrier or fuel supply vehicle. With a special artillery variant known as the Type 77-1. The roof may be used to carry a 122-mm field howitzer or an 85-mm anti-tank gun, their crews and ammunition. The pieces are loaded onto the roof from the rear via three ramps which can be carried slung along the hull sides when not in use.

VBTP-MR

The VBTP-MR armored personnel carrier is jointly developed by Italian Iveco and Brazilian MoD. In Portuguese the VBTP-MR stands for a Wheeled Medium Armored Personnel Carrier - Basic Platform. This project was originally called Urutu III. A contract was signed to develop this 6x6 APC in 2007 and it's mock-up was revealed in 2009. Development should be completed in 2011. It is worth mentioning that Iveco already designed and manufactured a number of military vehicles. It will replace the ageing EE-11 Urutu, developed by Engesa in the 1970s. This new armored vehicle will be manufactured in Brazil.

Armor of the VBTP-MR provides protection against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Vehicle can be fitted with add-on composite armor for improved protection. This armored personnel carrier has a V-shaped hull, which provides protection against landmines. Interior is fitted with a spall liner.

Several options of weapons are proposed for this armored personnel carrier. It might be fitted with remotely controlled 7.62-mm, 12.7-mm machine guns or 40-mm automatic grenade launcher. Variant with 30-mm cannon and anti-tank guided missiles is also proposed.

Vehicle has a crew of two and is designed to transport 9 troops. Troops enter and leave the vehicle via the rear doors or roof hatches. The VBTP-MR is fitted with modern battlef ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

M8 Buford

The M8 Buford light tank was developed by FMC to participate in the Airborne Gun System (AGS) programme. The aim of this programme was to develop a light air-droppable tank for the airborne troops, intended to replace the M551A1 Sheridan. The first prototype - XM8 was built in 1985. This tank won the competition, unfortunately the Armored Gun System programme was canceled in 1996 and the M8 Buford did not entered US Army service, leaving airborne forces dangerously low on firepower.

The M8 Buford uses combined aluminum and steel armor. Modular titanium add-on armor, including ERA packages can be added if necessary. The front armor with add-on packages protects the crew from 30-mm armor-piercing rounds. The M8 Buford is a relatively thin-skinned vehicle, designed to support infantry from covered position and to fight in areas where it is not going to run into main battle tanks.

Vehicle is completed with a fully-stabilized M68A1 105-mm rifled gun, or a Rheinmetall XM35 gun, fitted with an autoloader and fire control system. Fire control system is similar to that, used on the M1A2 Abrams main battle tank. Autoloader holds 19 to 21 rounds and provides a maximum rate of fire in 12 rounds per minute. Other projectiles are stowed near the driver. Gun can be loaded manually in case of emergency. During the trials it appeared that the am ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

TTD

The TTD or Tank Technology Demonstrator prototype main battle tank was completed in the early 1990s. It used some German Leopard 2 MBT technology and was intended to replace ageing South African MBTs. Only a prototype has been built and the TTD never went into service because of limited funding. This vehicle is currently kept at the Armor Museum. Some of the TTD subsystems were applied to the Olifant Mk.2. These upgraded MBTs are expected to serve well into the 21st century.

The TTD has all-welded steel hull and turret. Vehicle is protected by a composite armor. No official details of the protection have been released, however it was claimed that the front arc protects against APFSDS and HEAT rounds of unspecified caliber. All-round protection is against medium-caliber rounds. All critical subsystems are also protected against medium-caliber fire. Protection could be enhanced by modular add-on armor packages or ERA packages. Vehicle has improved protection against anti-tank mines.

The Tank Technology Demonstrator is armed with a GT-7 105-mm rifled gun, which is similar to British L7 tank gun, mounted in the Olifant Mk.1B tank turret. This gun fires all standard NATO 105-mm tank ammunition. It has a rate of fire in 6 rounds per minute. It is worth mentioning that the turret of the TTD can accommodate larger LIW 120-mm smoothbore gun. Most of the ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »

TK-X

The TK-X prototype main battle tank, also referred as the Type 10, is the latest Japanese development. This new lightweight MBT weights significantly less than other modern battle tanks. It is lighter than the current Japanese Type 90 main battle tank. Vehicle was designed to be lighter in order to comply with the Japanese road laws. The new MBT can be transported on standard commercial trailers. Developing this tank heavy emphasis was placed on C4I capabilities, as well as increased protection, firepower and mobility. Development of the TK-X began in early 2000s, however some sub-systems were developed in late 1990s. Vehicle was first publicly revealed in 2008. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the main contractor of the TK-X. Currently it is probably the most advanced main battle tank in the world. The TK-X might enter service with the Japanese Ground Self Defense Forces after a couple of years. It will replace the Type 74 and Type 90 MBTs.

The TK-X tank is armed with a 120-mm smoothbore gun, developed by Japan Steel Works. This company also license-produces the Rheinmetall 120-mm / L44 gun for the Type 90 MBT. The TK-X is fitted with an autoloader, located in the turret bustle. It's automatic loading system is more advanced than on it's predecessor. The TK-X main battle tank will fire a newly developed armor-piercing ammunition. It is compatible wi ... კითხვის გაგრძელება »
